Personal Experience

Prof. Nwadiuto (Diuto) Esiobu is a U.S. based Nigerian, an accomplished microbiologist and biotech inventor, a pioneer visionary and player in the African Biotech spheres with over 30 years of experience in biotechnology and environmental microbiology. She founded Applied Biotech International Nigeria Limited to democratize access to biotech tools and empower a generation of scientists. Professor Nwadiuto Esiobu is also a tenured Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology at a premier University in the United States of America where she is currently the inaugural Director and Lead PI of the Microbiome Innovation Cluster. She designs and directs several funded projects in Human microbiomes, Gut microbiomes and Plant-Soil microbiomes. In addition to creating the first collection of indigenous bacteria for sustainable agriculture and soil health, Professor Esiobu’s work has unveiled the effects of gender on gut microbiome composition and function, as well as the role of scalp dysbiosis in hair balding. She has developed and taught numerous courses applied to climate smart technologies and Sustainable Healthcare and public health.

A distinguished professional leader, Prof Esiobu is the current General Secretary of Applied Microbiology International (AMI) and serves as Trustee to several international organizations.

She is the founder and CEO Applied Biotech Inc. USA / Applied Biotech Intl Nigeria Ltd. She is also the President and founder of Neighborhood Scientists Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to building STEM capacity for all, especially Africans, Hispanics and Indians; advancing applied science solutions for societal challenges.

She has served in senior leadership roles in academia, industry, and governments, including the Africa Union and the US government in critical decision-making platforms on global food security and the energy/water/environment nexus.

She is often described as an intellectual dynamite whose professional distinction and leadership prowess spans countries and continents in policy and entrepreneurship.

She earned her B.Sc, MSc and Ph.D with grand distinction. Her post-doctoral training in molecular biology and biotechnology was earned from the premier Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, where she served recently as a Visiting Scientist at the Center for Microbiomes.

She founded Applied Biotech International Nigeria Ltd (ABINL) which has trained most of today’s skilled workforce in Life science and Biotechnology fields in Nigeria.

Her leadership in the growth of the Nigerian Biotechnology, Agribusiness and Emerging Technologies sector, has yielded remarkable dividend. Her mobile labs travel all over Nigeria, bringing innovation and discovery science to Nigeria’s enterprising workforce and youth. ABINL’s Applied Biotech Institute (ABI) has an excellent track record in lab design and equipment procurement.

At the ABI Laboratories in Quad Plaza Wuye, Abuja, Prof Esiobu’s team offers analytical services (hardly available in Nigeria) in all areas of molecular biology and biotechnology; including but not limited to Bio-assay design and execution, pollution impact assessment, bioremediation monitoring, GMO detection and analysis, Food quality control, metagenomics and sequencing, seed and soil testing, genotyping and phylogenetic analysis.

She seeks partners to grow the operations to a world-class Research and Development Institute to power the BIOECONOMY in Africa and beyond. Professor Diuto Esiobu is a passionate advocate for the African renaissance as attested by her landmark presentations at the US State Department, as a US President’s delegate to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit 2017 and at the Global Bio-economy Summit (GBS-2018) in Germany.

Among her many distinctions and awards are – ‘Who’s Who’ in America and Florida; Legacy-Maker- One of 100 most influential women in the history of Florida Atlantic University (2016), An Outstanding Nigerian Scientist in the US by WAZOBIA 2015, World Class Faculty by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance for Economic Development 2013, Distinction of Service Award, National Biotechnology Development Agency, Nigeria 2013, Faculty of Distinction for academic excellence and contributions to national and global scientific enterprise. FAU 2011, Outstanding Online Mentor and Service, American Society for Microbiology 2011 and much more.
